Title:Łukasiewicz logic and MV-algebras for a mathematical theory of fuzzy sets
View PDFAbstract:In this paper we propose an algebraic approach to fuzzy set theory by means of quantale and semiring reducts of residuated lattice structures of the real unit interval [0,1], with a particular focus on MV-algebras, the algebraic semantics of Łukasiewicz fuzzy logic. Several results of general interest are presented, together with some applications to Image Processing.
We also introduce a concept of topology of fuzzy sets which, being based on MV-algebras and their semiring and quantale reducts, allows natural generalizations of definitions and results of classical topology and, moreover, is amenable to a further extension to fuzzy sets whose membership functions may take also infinitesimal values.
