Title:Controllability of coupled oscillator networks
View PDFAbstract:Complex networks and complex systems describe the physical, biological, and social structures that connect the world we live in. Thus, the design of efficient and effective control mechanisms for these systems represents an important goal in physics and mathematics and a fundamental benchmark of our understanding of natural sciences in general. Recently, the concept of structural controllability of complex networks has been developed using the paradigm of linear, homogeneous dynamics on networks, however a large gap remains in our understanding of network control with nonlinear and heterogeneous dynamics. Here we extend the concept of controllability to networks of heterogeneous phase oscillators with nonlinear coupling in attaining a fully synchronized state and investigate the controllability of such networks as a function of both structural and dynamical heterogeneity as well as coupling strength. Interestingly, the controllability of a network is dictated by the coupling strength, dynamical heterogeneity, and mean degree of the network, and depends little on the structural heterogeneity of the network.
